On 25 March 2025 in Shillong, Hamza Choudhury became the first Premier League player to wear the red and green. Bangladesh drew 0-0 with India, and the result mattered less than the precedent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eighteen months later, the national team draws on players based in England, Canada and Italy. The Bangladesh Football Federation now scouts academies in eleven countries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamza Choudhury and the Sheffield United move<\/b><\/h2>\n

Choudhury remains the headline name. Born in Loughborough to a Grenadian father and a Bangladeshi mother, he joined the Leicester City academy at seven, made more than 100 senior appearances from 2017 and won the FA Cup in 2021, before taking a Bangladeshi passport in late 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

He now plays in the EFL Championship with Sheffield United, which changes what following him actually involves. A supporter in Dhaka who wants to watch him week to week is watching second-tier English football rather than the Premier League.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is the practical shift the diaspora project has produced. Bangladeshi fans now have reasons to follow the Championship, Italian lower-league football and the Canadian Premier League, three competitions that carried no local interest three years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a betting argument buried in that, and it has nothing to do with patriotism. Bookmakers price the Premier League with enormous care because millions of people bet on it, which leaves very little room for anyone to know something the market does not. A second-tier English club, a Serie C side in Sardinia or a Canadian Premier League team are priced far less sharply, simply because fewer people are watching. Shamit Shome brought Canadian experience<\/b><\/h2>\n

Shome agreed to represent Bangladesh in April 2025 and made his debut soon after. He arrived in Dhaka on 4 June having completed a league fixture for Cavalry FC days earlier, which gives an idea of the travel these call-ups involve.<\/span><\/p>\n

His background is unusual for the squad. He has represented Canada at senior and age-group level, and he plays in the Canadian Premier League, a competition that runs on a summer calendar and therefore clashes with international windows differently from European leagues. Coach Javier Cabrera brought him in specifically to strengthen a midfield that already had Choudhury in it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fahamedul Islam is the youngest of the group<\/b><\/h2>\n

At 20, <\/span>Fahamedul Islam<\/span><\/a> has the longest runway. Born in Feni, he moved through the youth systems at Spezia and Sampdoria before senior spells at Ligorna, Livorno and Olbia, where he made 28 appearances last season.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was called up for the India match in March 2025, travelled to Taif in Saudi Arabia for the training camp, then failed to make the final squad and returned to Italy. He was recalled in May and made his debut against Bhutan on 4 June, playing an hour. He has seven caps as a left-back or left winger.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jamal Bhuyan set the template<\/b><\/h2>\n

None of this happens without the captain. Bhuyan, born in Denmark, debuted in 2013 at the SAFF Championship and has passed 84 appearances, a total no other member of this group will approach for years.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also proved the model worked before anyone believed in it. Tariq Kazi followed him from Nordic football, and by the time Choudhury’s paperwork cleared in December 2024, the federation had a process rather than an experiment. It has since widened the net to academies in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Italy, France, Portugal, Australia, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, Spain and Estonia.<\/span><\/p>\n

What the Asian Cup campaign actually delivered<\/b><\/h2>\n

The qualifying group finished on 31 March. Singapore topped it with 14 points and took the single place at the 2027 tournament in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong finished second on eight, and Bangladesh came third on five from one win, two draws and three defeats. India finished bottom on the same points, separated by the head-to-head record.<\/span><\/p>\n

The campaign produced one result worth keeping. On 18 November in Dhaka, Bangladesh beat India 1-0 through Shekh Morsalin’s goal in the twelfth minute, holding on through sustained second-half pressure. It was the sort of win the national team had not delivered in a competitive fixture for years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The closing match summed up the rest. Singapore won 1-0 through Harhys Stewart in the 31st minute, and Bangladesh’s best moment came in the 79th when Mirajul Islam struck the post from a Choudhury delivery. Bangladesh have still reached the Asian Cup only once, in 1980, and the gap to Singapore across six matches was nine points.<\/span><\/p>\n

The problem nobody has solved<\/b><\/h2>\n

There is a harder story underneath the optimism. Domestic football in Bangladesh has not improved at the same pace as the national team’s profile, and the diaspora recruitment drive has arguably masked that.<\/span><\/p>\n

The players who generate the attention learned their football in Leicester, Genoa and Calgary. The pipeline that produces footballers inside Bangladesh remains a separate question, and one that a passport office cannot answer.<\/span><\/p>\n

For now, the effect on supporters is real enough. A country that follows cricket above everything has spent eighteen months paying attention to football again, and there are Bangladeshi names on team sheets across three continents each weekend.
